Romania Digital Nomad Tax Guide 2026
Complete tax guide for digital nomads in Romania. 2026 rates, visa requirements, cost of living — no fluff.
Romania has one of the most interesting tax setups for digital nomads in the EU. The micro-enterprise regime lets companies with revenue under €500,000 pay just 3% corporate tax on turnover (yes, turnover, not profit — but 3% of turnover is hard to beat). If you then take dividends, there is an 8% dividend tax plus 10% health insurance contribution on dividends, giving you an effective total tax burden around 12-18%. For regular employment or freelancing, personal income tax is a flat 10%, with social security of 25% for pensions and 10% for health. The digital nomad visa requires €3,300/month for non-EU citizens and gives one year. Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, and Bucharest all have thriving IT communities and solid internet infrastructure. A 1BR runs €350-500/month in most cities, €500-700 in central Bucharest. English is widely spoken among younger people and in tech circles, but government bureaucracy is still overwhelmingly Romanian. An accountant costs about €50-100/month here and is essentially mandatory if you want to avoid fines. The tax filing system (known as the Unique Declaration) has been simplified recently but still requires attention to deadlines — March 25th for income tax, May 25th for health and pension contributions. One thing most guides don't mention: registering as self-employed (PFA) takes a few weeks and requires a physical presence for some steps. The micro-enterprise route (SRL) is faster and often better for pure digital nomads who can structure through a company.
