Malta Digital Nomad Tax Guide 2026

Complete tax guide for digital nomads in Malta. 2026 rates, visa requirements, cost of living — no fluff.

Malta combines the weather of southern Europe with an English-speaking business environment and a tax system that can be extremely favourable if you structure it right. Standard income tax is progressive, 0% to 35%, and social security for self-employed is a flat 15%. The Nomad Residence Permit requires €2,700/month and is valid for one year, renewable. For residents who are ordinarily resident but not domiciled in Malta (a legal designation you can often claim as a digital nomad), foreign income is only taxed if remitted to Malta — the classic remittance basis. If you leave your earnings in a foreign bank account, they're not subject to Maltese tax. Capital gains on foreign assets are exempt for non-domiciled residents. One complication: Malta has a corporate tax rate of 35%, but shareholders can claim a refund of 6/7ths of the tax paid, bringing the effective rate down to about 5%. It sounds complicated because it is — you absolutely need a Maltese accountant. Valletta and Sliema are the main hubs; a 1BR apartment runs €700-1,000/month. Internet is reliable and English is an official language, so there's no language barrier with government services. The 183-day test applies, but Malta also has a concept of 'ordinary residence' that can be triggered even with fewer days if you have a settled intention to stay. For EU citizens, the process is straightforward. For non-EU, be prepared for paperwork. The biggest downsides: it's a small island, things move slowly, and the summer tourist crush can be overwhelming.
