Costa Rica Digital Nomad Tax Guide 2026
Complete tax guide for digital nomads in Costa Rica. 2026 rates, visa requirements, cost of living — no fluff.
Costa Rica operates territorial taxation, which is the magic word for any digital nomad: only income from Costa Rican sources is taxable. If you work for foreign clients, your income is not taxed in Costa Rica. Standard personal rates run from 0% to 25% for local income, but for most remote workers this won't apply. The digital nomad visa (Estancia para Nómadas Digitales) requires $3,000/month for individuals or $4,000/month for families, and is valid for one year with a possible one-year extension. The main benefit of this visa over a tourist visa is that you can open a bank account, get a driver's license, and — crucially — the visa exemption means you don't have to do visa runs every 90 days. Costa Rica is not cheap by Latin American standards. A 1BR in San José's nicer neighborhoods runs $600-1,000/month; beach towns like Santa Teresa and Tamarindo are $800-1,500. Power and internet in rural areas can be unreliable during the rainy season (May-November). The quality of life is high — stable democracy, no military, excellent healthcare — but you pay for it. Spanish is essential outside tourist zones. For freelancers who might do some local work, self-employed social security (CCSS) contributions are about 16-19% of declared income. Filing is quarterly through a system called ATV. One underappreciated feature: Costa Rica has a special economic zone regime (Zona Franca) that offers 0% income tax for qualifying businesses, though this is more relevant for companies than individual freelancers. The 183-day test determines residency. For most digital nomads, Costa Rica works best as a tax-free base for foreign income — just keep your work strictly non-Costa Rican and enjoy the pura vida.
